COMPETITIONS
(see Fishing Trips for details)
In 1973, with considerable unrest on the fly fishing scene at the
closed shop method of selecting anglers to represent England at
International level, the L.F.F.A. played host to all the interested
bodies at a meeting that changed the shape of future selection. The
result was the formation of the Confederation of English Fly Fishers,
with the purpose of organising eliminator matches and a National Final,
from which the top rods would represent England in one of the two
Internationals held each year. This democaratic system is still in use
today.
Since the democratic system of team selection to fish for England was
introduced, over twenty-eight L.F.F.A. members have represented their
country, some more than once. Two seniors and four juniors have fished
in their respective World Fly Fishing Championships. The L.F.F.A. can
boast of one member, Graham Pearson, fishing for England at senior
level in the same year that his son, Gareth, then a junior club member,
fished for England at junior level. Several junior members have been
selected to captain their team and the inaugral Youth World Fly Fishing
Championship team was captained by a junior member.
The success of the Home Internationals prompted the starting of other
major competitions, the largest being the Benson and Hedges. The
L.F.F.A. has the distinction of winning the first series in 1982 from
which, with the prize money, the Leicester Fly Fishing Show was
launched.
Other firsts for the L.F.F.A. were winning the Hinckley Shield Team
Prize at the first Midlands Federation Bank Match and L.F.F.A. member,
Mick Parkin, winning the Ruddles Open World Championship in its opening
year.
The L.F.F.A. frequently provide boatmen for National and International
events for Adult, Youth, Ladies and Disabled Fly Fishers when held
locally.
Over 20 trophies, Junior, Senior and Ladies, are
presented at the Presentation Dinner/Dance, the highlight of the social
calendar. |
